While we have focused significant attention on Betty over the last couple of years, Carden owns other elephants. Two of them are not presently performing and live at Wilstem Wildlife Park in Indiana. The other remaining Carden elephant, Janice, is forced to perform alongside Betty as part of their traveling circus.
Sadly, Betty and Janice have been on the road most of the year. When not performing in the circus, they were rented out for other photo ops and rides, as you might remember from our action against the car dealership in Oklahoma that used them as part of a sales event.
Born in Thailand in 1972, Janice was stolen from her home as a calf along with six other elephants. They were sent to the now-defunct Lion County Safari in California. In 1987, she was transferred to the awful Have Trunk Will Travel before ending up at Carden in 1993.
During a 1997 performance in Canada, a veterinarian observed Janice being brutally beaten and kicked in the face by a Carden trainer. In 2003, Carden was cited for not providing Janice with adequate foot care.
But 30 years of servitude is not enough for greedy Brett Carden. Despite her advanced age, he continues his exploitation of Janice for profit. Let him know that the time has come for Carden Circus to end the disgusting practice of forcing elephants to perform and give rides.
Take a look for yourself at what these elderly elephants must endure hundreds of times per year:
