In Memoriam: JB of the Missing 318

10/9/24

We are sad to share that an important member of the CWI team -- JB -- passed away yesterday.

JB, originally named Jelly Bean, joined our microsanctuary just over one year ago. He was one of the "Missing 318" who was rescued after the San Diego Humane Society sent 318 small animals to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA), which then shipped the animals, consisting mostly of guinea pigs, to a reptile breeder. HSSA initially lied and claimed that the animals were sent to a private rescue. Fortunately, activists intervened...but sadly, only 62 animals were recovered. Of them, four joined Vegas Friends of Guinea Pig Rescue and, after our campaign to demand justice for the Missing 318, CWI brought one of those animals -- a guinea pig named Jelly Bean -- onto our team.

JB enjoyed a wonderful and spoiled life here at CWI where he ultimately became a companion to another CWI team member -- Tony the Werewolf. The two ended up becoming great friends.

Unfortunately, JB developed a bladder stone, which ended up blocking his urethra. Before he could have surgery, his kidneys began to fail and recovery became impossible. We made the painful decision to help him pass without further suffering. We will never forget JB and everything he overcame, and we will continue to fight for ALL animals, both great and small, in his name.
