Meet elephants Tembo & Tina: captive and alone.
12/30/24
Indu, Tembo, and Tina: three elephants, each with their own stories, all sharing a horrible predicament - they are confined at zoos with no female companionship of their own species. Previously we introduced you to Indu at Phoenix Zoo, and we thank everyone who took action!
Today we are expanding that campaign and including the other two lone female elephants in zoos - Tembo at Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas and Tina at Los Angeles Zoo.
Indu, Tembo, and Tina are all located at zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). In their accreditation materials, the AZA notes that female elephants should be housed in groups of at least three. Yet despite this, AZA zoos frequently subvert those recommendations and keep single elephants with no apparent threat to the zoo's accredited status.
This is unacceptable. Please sign and share our latest letter to the AZA, even if you initially signed our letter for Indu.
